Beginner's Mind: Painting with an Open Heart

When: July 31-Sept. 7 2012

As summer draws to a close, art is going up all over town. The Durham Arts Council celebrates three concurrent shows this Third Friday. Tessa Guzé's emotionally rich oil paintings occupy the first-floor Allenton Gallery in Beginner's Mind: Painting With an Open Heart. Her lush, colorful portraits of people and animals find her subjects' inner lights. Head upstairs for a collaboration between FRANCO and Frank Myers called The Art of Cool Project Visual Collection. Combining imagery of activists and entertainers, the slick, graphic work bolts off the walls with iconographic power. Nuno Gomes is also a graphic artist; in Long Play, he's more interested in critiquing branding through warp and slice than straight-up click-and-drag collage. The Guzé and FRANCO and Frank Myers shows run through Sept. 7; Gomes' work is on display into early January. Friday's reception runs 5–7 p.m. —Chris Vitiello
