BRANDON CORDREY AND MELINDA FINE: BEAUTIFUL ALCHEMY

FRIDAY, AUG. 7, RALEIGH

BLOCK GALLERY—Mixed media artists Brandon Cordrey and Melinda Fine share a show on the theme of technology and the media at the City of Raleigh's Block Gallery. The INDY got an extensive sneak peek at Cordrey's offerings, and we're impressed. Using drawing, collage, painting, glazing and digital image transfers, he seems to answer a question no one had thought to ask: "What would it feel like to be René Magritte reading LIFE with a snootful of LSD?" Heads transform into globes of flowers and butterflies as warplanes fly overhead and the cameras always look on. But more than theme or process, Cordrey's striking sense of color and composition makes his work stand out. Beautiful Alchemy opens Aug. 5 and, after this opening reception, runs through Sept. 18. 5–7 p.m., free,

222 W. Hargett St., Raleigh, 919-996-3610,
