Be Still: A Storefront Church in Durham

When: Sept. 12-Dec. 13 2013

My experience of storefront churches derives almost entirely from glimpses through a windshield at about 35 mph. Because they seem to spring up out of strip mall blight, I have (guiltily) a negative association. Kristin Bedford erases that unfounded preconception with Be Still: A Storefront Church in Durham, an exhibit of photographs that resolve the architecture with the practice of worship. Bedford, an MFA candidate in Duke's Experimental and Documentary Arts program, spent 10 months getting to know the pastor and congregation at Durham's Apostolic Deliverance Rebirth Outreach Ministries. Her frank and inspiring images reveal the utility of belief and the essence of community. —Chris Vitiello
