Battle Chaser

When: Sat., Dec. 13, 8 p.m. 2014

THE STAG'S HEADThe downtown Raleigh art and culture magazine Oak City Hustle has thrown breakdance battles before. Now it turns visual art into a similar kind of b-boy faceoffwith a twist of American Idol—for cash and glory in a new series called Battle Chaser. (Too bad Scribble Jam was already taken.) For this premiere event, artists paid $15 to submit a piece on the theme "The Bad Guys Won," and a limited number were selected for the main event at The Stag's Head beer garden. One winner, whom you can vote for by text message, will receive $250, and all artists can sell their pieces commission-free. The many contestants include Paul Friedrich of Onion Head Monster fame, impressionist painter Greg Carter and animator Bart Cusick. There's also a "Live Paint Battle" between Victor Knight III and Eric Dixon, a rematch from their showdown in the Mass Appeal dance party series last year. DJ Juan Matta heats up the floor after the art battle concludes at 11 p.m. 8 p.m., $5, 106 Glenwood Ave., 919-839-6207, —Brian Howe
