Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba

When: Fri., Oct. 14, 8 p.m. 2011

There's an infectious joy in watching Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba perform. Kouyaté, a virtuoso Malian ngoni player, and his band create a sound that fuses African rhythms with an inflection of American blues to create a merrily volatile wealth of music. The band features four customized forms of the ngoni, an ancient West African lute closely tied to ancestors of the banjo. Kouyaté and the others pluck and slide with expert syncopation while Kouyaté's wife, Amy Sacko (who's earned a reputation as "the Tina Turner of Mali"), delivers a soaring vocal over the top. Tickets to the 8 p.m. show run $22–$28, or $5 for Duke students. —Ashley Melzer
