At the core of Protestant Christianity is the belief that God, for a few years, became a man in the person of Jesus. The metaphysics of this transformation have occupied theologians for a long time. But secular folks might be more curious about the opposite question: How did a man—an apocalyptic prophet and anarchist agitator, no less—become God? Bart D. Ehrman ventures an answer in his latest book, How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher from Galilee. A scholar of Christian history and philology and a religious studies professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, Ehrman has authored many books, four of them New York Times bestsellers, that briskly distill his findings for a mass audience. They include Misquoting Jesus, which showed how the Bible has changed in translation, and Forged, which argued that some New Testament books were not by their stated authors. How Jesus Became God continues Ehrman's mission to separate historical fact from religious fable, which he does with the rigor of a scholar and the emotional nuance of a former evangelical. Ehrman has further appearances at Flyleaf and Bull's Head Bookshop in Chapel Hill, McIntyre's in Pittsboro and the Regulator in Durham; check the venues' websites for details. —Brian Howe
