Band Together's Last Band Standing with Big Fat Gap, Mac & Juice Quartet, The Beast, The Deluge

When: Sat., March 2, 8 p.m. 2013

So you think only terrible acts play "battles of the bands"? This weekend's Last Band Standing might rewrite that prejudice. Durham's The Beast offers one of the area's most confounding genre fusions, finding room within intricate jazz for the brawny rhymes of rapper Pierce Freelon. Recently, the band has enhanced this attack with a sharp electronic edge. Chapel Hill's Big Fat Gap is one of the Triangle's best bluegrass standard-bearers, presenting acoustic picking with the exuberance of a rock band. The Deluge and the Mac & Juice Quartet are the night's weaker links, each specializing in workmanlike folk-rock that will tap toes but leave few lasting impressions. The winner takes home a cash prize and the chance to open Band Together's big-name benefit later this year. —Jordan Lawrence
