Balloons With a Z

When: Fri., Jan. 2, 6-9 p.m. 2015

FLANDERS GALLERY—It was hard to miss Polish crochet artist Olek's installation at Flanders Gallery in 2012. She blanketed the front of the building with so much hot-pink yarn that she ran out of time to use the 20,000 balloons Flanders owner Kelly McChesney had bought at her request. They were stored away in boxes, unused. But when Flanders relocated to a smaller space next to Lump in November, McChesney knew the balloons' time had come. In this rather ad hoc show, seven local artists—Megan Sullivan, Jacyln Bowie, Derek Toomes, Neill Prewitt, Bill Thelan, Gabrielle Duggan, Lincoln Hancock and Kellie Bornhoft, with consultation from balloon artist Adam Dipert—will wrestle the balloons (heroically blown up by McChesney) into an immersive installation experience. "We don't really know what it will be like until we start installing," McChesney says. But balloons are finicky performers, and she doesn't expect the show to run for more than a week—if it even makes it through the night. 6–9 p.m., free, 505 S. Blount St., 919-757-9533, Haver Currin
