BALLET FOLKLÓRICO CUTUMBA

WEDNESDAY, JULY 15–THURSDAY, JULY 16, DURHAM

CAROLINA THEATRE—Tumba francesca. Gagá. Vodún. Santería. The names refer to more than mere dance styles; they invoke cultures, cosmologies and belief systems from Africa, Haiti, France and other countries that commingled with the indigenous culture on the island of Cuba in the 18th and 19th centuries. For 55 years, Ballet Folklórico Cutumba has researched and collected the music, dance and stories of these varying traditions, resulting in performances that range from "the let-your-hair-down atmosphere of a Cuban street parade" (Washington Post) to portrayals of Yoruban deities. "Their personalities jump out at you," says American Dance Festival director Jodee Nimerichter. "They're so immediately colorful, exciting and exuberant." 8 p.m., $11.16$83.81,
