When: Sat., Aug. 3, 8 p.m. and Sun., Aug. 4, 2 p.m. 2013

Ashley Walls White is a young dance maker with a lot on her mind. But then, we'd expect that from an artist who came up through the ranks in N.C. State's dance program, working with brainy choreographers Robin Harris and Autumn Mist Belk. In 8 Short Works, her company's first full-length program in this region, seven dancers take on Harlan Ellison (in the premiere AM), pose an existential question raised by World War II (set to spoken word counterpoint by Steve Reich) and find a way to stage body dysmorphic disorders that so many women fall prey to. Leavening these are lighter looks at different relationships (The Problem Is and Puis-je cliquer sur votre souris?), along with a comic sideswipe at modern dance emperors—and the audiences that love them too much. To say the least, there should be plenty to talk about on the way home. —Byron Woods
