Audio Under the Stars: Homecoming

When: Fri., May 29, 8-10 p.m. 2015

AUDIO UNDER THE STARS

CENTER FOR DOCUMENTARY STUDIES, DURHAM

FRIDAY, MAY 29

We let it snow in our Summer Guide this year (see page 22), but there are plenty of more plainly summery events we're excited about, too, including the return of Audio Under the Stars. In its new summer season, the recorded-storytelling listening party moves from its former home in the courtyard of SPECTRE Arts to the garden of the Center for Documentary Studies—which makes sense, as that's where many of the people behind it work. They solicit story submissions on a theme and help entrants produce recordings of them to radio standards, resulting in a mini-This American Life with a distinct local terroir. Past themes have included "Dog Days" and "Fish Out of Water;" this time, it's "Homecoming: Stories of Leaving and Return." It's bound to elicit some good yarns, as it resonates deeply with this area's unstable polarities. Anybody who knows the Triangle will tell you that after it gets hold of you, its force might repulse or attract at any given time, but either way, it never lets you go. 8 p.m., free, 1317 W. Pettigrew St., Durham, 919-660-3663, www.documentarystudies.duke.edu.Brian Howe
