At Any Price

Rated R 105 min. 2013

Directed by North Carolina native Ramin Bahrani, At Any Price is a stark farmland drama that chronicles one family's moral decay among the amber waves of grain. Dennis Quaid headlines as Henry, an Iowa farmer who cuts some ethical corners when giant agribusiness concerns threaten his family and farm. Zac Efron plays the rebel son, a local hero on the stock car circuit who wants nothing to do with the family business. It's a film full of small surprises: These heartland folks don't behave like we expect, the moral quandaries are complex, and the usual plot formulas are discarded. Everything pivots on the tremendous performance of Quaid, who fairly vibrates with twitchy anxiety. It's an artful and deliberate film—about its characters, mostly, but also about America and the cultural premium we place on winning at any price.
