Asleep At The Wheel, Hot Club of Cowtown

When: Wed., April 1, 8 p.m. 2015

Asleep At the Wheel is the sound of Texas. Songs glorifying and lamenting the cowboy way are corralled from a herd of eclectic composers, including Cole Porter’s “Don’t Fence Me In” and Bob Wills’ “Miles and Miles Of Texas.” Non-cowboy stuff like Commander Cody’s “Hot Rod Lincoln” and a mellow version of Nat King Cole’s take on “Route 66” creep into the setlist, too. But co-founder, singer and guitarist Ray Benson, who has been the hub of the revolving personnel wheel since the start, keeps the Western Swing tradition ridin’, ropin’ and wranglin’. —Grant Britt
