Ashrae Fax, Profligate, Lazy Magnet

When: Sun., Sept. 1, 9 p.m. 2013

Cult favorite Greensboro band Ashrae Fax warms up for a looming string of shows with a reunion gig. Keyboardist-singer Renée Mendoza now purveys warped country-pop with husband Brian Haran in Filthybird and spectral drone in Ama Divers. Guitarist and electronics wizard Alex Chesney now produces bleep-bloops as Faster Detail. But they worked together as Ashrae Fax in the late '90s and early '00s, leaving behind only a few self-released short-run CD-Rs of their moody yet often danceable post-punk, industrial and new wave stylings. A reissue by the Mexican Summer label of their last and only full-length, Static Crash, is bringing more interest than ever before to Ashrae Fax's Siouxsie Sioux-redolent synth pop; nervy lyrics and an exuberant gloom suggest this is a lost artifact from the Factory Records vaults. Philly's Profligate, Providence's Lazy Magnet and Carrboro's own Secret Boyfriend open in noisy electronic fashion. —Brian Howe
