As Oceans, Wings Denied, Escher, Iscosceles Project, Aether Realm

When: Tue., June 5, 7 p.m. 2012

The term "djent"—an onomatopoeia coined to describe a heavily distorted, palm-muted riff and used as a tag for the tech-metal bands that employ it—isn't a uniformly accepted subgenre, but tonight it's worn proudly. Boone's As Oceans make the grunting industrial guitar sound a coarse filler between spacey ambiance and melodic soloing. Washington, D.C., band Wings Denied uses the technique more subtly, wielding it as a sputtering muscle-car motor behind Deftones-informed modern rock melody. Raleigh's Escher favor a metalcore sound; they build a bridge between the Meshugga-chugga of As Oceans and Wings Denied and the prog-predilections of Toronto's The Isosceles Project. The dramatic and melodic metal outfit Aether Realm also plays. Tickets to the 7 p.m. show are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. —Bryan C. Reed
