This latest entry in the found-footage horror film genre follows a group of attractive young urban explorers as they descend into the catacombs beneath Paris. The remains of more than six million dead people are interred below the city, we learn, and sure enough our heroes run across a few of them. There's actually a cool and twisty premise at the heart of this scary movie endeavor, concerning occult magic and spatial orientation, and the claustrophobic visuals are effective. But the framing story is tired B-movie hokum, the characters are barely sketched, and the sound design is psychopathic. Why do these films always assume louder equals scarier?
