AQUILA THEATRE: THE TEMPEST, WUTHERING HEIGHTS

FRIDAY, FEB. 27–SUNDAY, MARCH 1, RALEIGH

TITMUS THEATRE AT NCSU—Tampering with the classics is de rigueur in modern theater—understandably, as said classics have been relentlessly performed for 200, 300, even 400 years. But this ongoing experiment still needs a control group to remind us why these works are worth keeping alive through updates. New York's Aquila Theatre carries that torch with aplomb, staging classical theater in a vibrant contemporary manner without completely tearing up timeless scripts and contexts. Now the company brings a pair of great works to NCSU Center Stage. The Tempest (Feb. 27) ranks alongside A Midsummer Night's Dream among Shakespeare's most mystical, spirited plays, with an exiled wizard, his daughter and a colorful cast of royalty and rogues all embroiled in intrigues of love, politics and revenge while shipwrecked on a remote island. And in a theatrical adaptation of novelist Emily Brontë's windswept peak of Romantic Era literature, Wuthering Heights (Feb. 28March 1), hot passions drive gothic plot turns in melancholy locales. This sort of magic, melodrama and storm-lashed romance never goes out of style. 8 p.m. Fri.–Sat.; 3 p.m. Sun., $28 (one show)–$42 (both shows), 2241 Dunn Ave., Raleigh, 919-515-1100,
