Apache Dropout, See Gulls

When: Thu., Sept. 18, 9 p.m. 2014

Apache Dropout, a Bloomington, Indiana garage-rock trio, managed quite the lasting impression with their self-titled 2011 LP. Their Roky Erickson-meets-The Cramps sputter and swagger collided with a heady, heavy boogie. The next year's Bubblegum Graveyard was crisper and earned the band a wider audience, but Apache Dropout has never been better than on August's Heavy Window, which at last balances the hooky concision of Bubblegum with the debut's raw impulse. Even after shedding the founding rhythm section, frontman Sonny Blood manages remarkable consistency of vision. The insistent, driving low-end provides a sturdy foundation for Blood's guitar squalls and vocal yelps, creating a dizzying psych-rock trip that always brings you back home. With the suddenly, deservedly buzzing See Gulls. —Bryan C. Reed
