Anthony Abbott

When: Wed., Oct. 26, 7 p.m. 2011

Poet Anthony Abbott reads from his latest collection of life-affirming lyric work, If Words Could Save Us (Lorimer Press). The Davidson College professor's first book, The Girl in the Yellow Raincoat, garnered a Pulitzer nomination. Abbott's well-crafted narrative and dramatic verse meditates upon classic themes of love, change and death, framed within the compassionate persistence of the living. The title poem of the new book, which includes a CD of Abbott reading his work, waxes, "Healing is the only language of love, my lamb/ For wherever we have touched, the tree that grows will be blessed, my bliss." The 7 p.m. reading is free. —Chris Vitiello
