Ani DiFranco, Pearl & the Beard

When: Fri., Sept. 27, 8 p.m. 2013

It's a challenge to remain fresh. Most artists just don't have enough to say or the skill to continually reinvent how they express themselves. Not Ani DiFranco. Though she established her identity as a brash, earnest folkie during her 20s in the 1990s, she's remained adventurous. DiFranco spent the last decade broadening her palette, particularly on the production side. Three of her last four albums—2005's wonderful Joe Henry-produced Knuckle Down, 2008's relatively lush Red Letter Year and last year's Which Side Are You On?—have showcased a craftier and more unpredictable artist than expected. On her latest, she moves from the skronk-psych of "Amendment" to the bubbly calypso beat of "Splinter" with ease. —Chris Parker
