This entry into the genre of lovable old bastards on film comes close to being good but is hamstrung by a director that has lost his touch. Michael Douglas (who should thank his deity for Jack Nicholson's retirement) stars as Oren Little, a realtor who takes pleasure in his ability to be unlovable. Left to care for a granddaughter he had no idea existed, he begins to rely on the help of the neighbor next door, Leah (Diane Keaton); will a possible romance thaw the old man's heart? Director Rob Reiner insists on softening Oren's edges by the end, although no real character development is ever shown onscreen. Where did the Reiner of such modern classics as Stand By Me and The Princess Bride go?
