Anamanaguchi, Fang Island, Moon King

When: Wed., Nov. 7, 8:30 p.m. 2012

A decade ago, Mono, Explosions in the Sky and multiple peers and disciples plumbed dramatic atmosphere in a post-rock surge. But more recent instrumentalists such as Dan Deacon and, tonight, Anamanaguchi trade in ever-multiplying euphoria. It's not the same mountaintop, but both forms apply thrilling vertical dynamics. As a chiptunes band, Anamanaguchi uses a fairly expected palette (fuzzy guitars and hacked Nintendos) but masterfully mixes the driving cinematics of late-'80s video games with fist-pumping joy-rock. While not an instrumental band, Fang Island's blindingly positive guitar rock heroics have largely the same effect as headliner Anamanaguchi's nonverbal bliss-outs. Moon King plays first. —Corbie Hill
