An Evening with Livingston Press

When: Mon., Dec. 8, 7-8:30 p.m. 2014

GREGG CUSICK, L.C. FIORE AND MIRIAM HERIN

THE REGULATOR BOOKSHOP, DURHAM

MONDAY, DEC. 8

This evening of readings from fiction authors published by the University of West Alabama's Livingston Press includes Durham's Gregg Cusick, whose new book of short stories, My Father Moves Through Time Like a Dirigible, is earning some promising early notices. His slice-of-life stories assume perspectives from a child at a wake to an elderly person in a principal's office, often focusing on shiftless characters at the margins of society. Noted Hillsborough author Lee Smith calls the book "the most rewarding collection of new fiction I have read in years." Cusick is joined by two authors who are also decorated with small-press circuit awards. L.C. Fiore's novel Green Gospel pits eco-terrorists against evangelical Christians; Miriam Herrin's Absolution, which has a protagonist from the Carolinas, looks back at the Vietnam War era through the lens of a contemporary courtroom thriller. 7 p.m., free, 720 Ninth St., 919-286-2700, www.regulatorbookshop.com. —Brian Howe
