Amadeus | Common Ground Theatre | Stage | Indy Week

When: March 27-29, 8 p.m., April 2-5, 8 p.m. and April 9-12, 8 p.m. 2014

Fair warning to those anticipating a live duplicate of the 1984 Miloš Forman film: "If you're expecting high tea in Salieri's salon, you're going to be surprised. A Bacchanalian animal festival is closer to what you're going to get." That's the word from John Jimerson, whose Leviathan Theatre Company is staging a decidedly unconventional take on Peter Shaffer's play. Director Jay O'Berski takes cues from avant-garde director Robert Wilson and painter Hieronymus Bosch. Mask maker Wil Deedler, costume designer Chelsea Kurtzman and a stellar cast (including Jade Arnold, Carly Prentis Jones and Laurie Wolf) collaborate to create a truly nightmarish gallery of grotesques to populate 18th-century Vienna. Think we're exaggerating? See, if you dare, a haunting video preview at Then try unseeing it. —Byron Woods
