Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater | UNC Campus: Memorial Hall | Stage | Indy Week

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

When: Sat., April 10 and Sun., April 11 2010

Alvin Ailey might be the most well-known name in dance. He founded his company in 1958 and gained a reputation for including different dance styles complemented by exceptional production values. Revelations, which debuted in 1960 and stands as Ailey's most famous work, depicted the sweep of African-American history against a backdrop of blues music and traditional spiritual songs. Since then, the company has performed worldwide, and Ailey himself was inducted into the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame. They'll roll through the Triangle tonight as part of their North American tour. No word on what works will show, but it's sure to be, as The New York Times says, "pure movement, pure magic." Performances are tonight at 8 and tomorrow at 2 p.m. Tickets run $50–$100 for the general public, while UNC students can see the show for a steal at $10. —Sarah Ewald
