Allman Brothers Band, Steve Winwood

When: Fri., Aug. 30, 6:30 p.m. 2013

You likely won't find a more direct head-to-head battle than this Southern rock showdown: While classic rock icons The Allman Brothers Band play their regular late-summer gig in Raleigh, the group's founding guitarist, Dickey Betts, takes the stage across the Triangle in Durham.

After being booted from the Allmans in 2000, Betts allocated his energy to touring and recording under his own name, as he had done intermittently since the '70s. The Allmans, meanwhile, have maintained a lineup of instrumental stalwarts since his departure, vivifying their jams with the incendiary dual guitar interplay of Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. Steve Winwood opens for them at Walnut Creek.

The set lists likely will have several selections in common: From classics such as "Ramblin' Man" and "Blue Sky" to the instantly recognizable riffs of "Jessica" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," Betts penned some of the Allmans' most indelible material. He'll be joined at the Carolina Theatre by his son, guitarist Duane Betts, as well as several longtime associates. Like the Allmans, Betts hasn't released a new album in the last decade, but expect his lesser-known solo work to mingle between blues covers and signature songs. —Spencer Griffith
