Alfred Hitchcock Retrospective

When: May 17-30 2013

The Master of Suspense gets a thorough retrospective of his greatest hits—and some underrated gems—in this two-week survey. For newbies, we recommend the 35mm presentations of Hitchcock masterpieces Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window and Vertigo (which finally unseated Citizen Kane as the greatest film of all time in a Sight & Sound critics' poll last year). For advanced studies, there's a 35mm screening of Rope, with its gay-killer subtext and 10-minute continuous takes. Then try some of the lesser-known films in the HD presentations: Marnie, a psychologically intriguing tale that's even more interesting if you know a bit about Hitchcock's unhealthy obsession with star Tippi Hedren (explored in last year's BBC film The Girl), or Torn Curtain, a flawed but fascinating Cold War thriller with Paul Newman and Julie Andrews. Though there's not room for every Hitchcock classic, there's definitely a choice sampling of the films that made him a cinematic legend—and it's infinitely better than sitting through last fall's dreadful Hitchcock. —Zack Smith

Price: $9 per screening
