Alex Cuba

When: Tue., Nov. 23, 8 p.m. 2010

"Cuba" is the adopted surname of Alexis Puentes, a singer-songwriter known as much for his velvet suits and meticulously coiffed afro as for his guitar-driven blend of Afro-Cuban folk-pop. "Cuba" is a handle he comes by honestly, though: The restless hipster emigrated from his native isle a decade ago to live in British Columbia, where he recently collaborated with Canadian Nelly Furtado, co-writing her first full-length Spanish album, Mi Plan. Cuba's own sound has migrated, too, moving toward more innovative fusions of Cuban trova and son with international jazz and pop. A Juno Award winner and Latin Grammy winner, Cuba is comfortable whether performing his starry-eyed compositions alone at the mic with his Gibson guitar or backed by studio rockers. While he calls his sound "Latin soul," Cuba's smooth, low-vibrato vocal recalls James Taylor as much as Marvin Gaye. Whatever you call it, he's twisting expectations of what Cuban music should be. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
