Though the current path of the N.C. Legislature makes it dubious as to whether African-Americans will be able to vote or own property in the future, it's worth nothing that our state does have a history of progressive attitudes. Case in point: A group of NC A&T students became the first African-Americans to serve in positions other than galley hands in the modern United States Navy. During World War II, B-1, as they were known, became the first band of African-American musicians employed by the Navy. Author Alex Albright has chronicled their story in his new book, The Forgotten First: B-1 and the Integration of the Modern Navy. Visit his reading to learn more about this little-known chapter of North Carolina history. —Zack Smith
