Ahleuchatistas, Savage Knights

When: Fri., May 28, 10 p.m. 2010

Savage Knights, an avant-garde quintet with gorgeous, varied instrumentation, are specialists in tone. The Knights wander freely, embracing lyrical midnight jazz, free-form expressionism and klezmer. Woodwinds and brass lay steady, patient drones that last for hypnotic minutes on end. Moog tones wash throughout, like waves on some subconscious shoreline. Audiences familiar with Asheville's Ahleuchatistas may not recognize the latest incarnation. Gone is the intentionally inaccessible ultra-prog they spent most of the decade perfecting—and gone is wild-eyed genius drummer Sean Dail. Now a guitar and drums duo, they specialize in heavy mood drones, like stoner rock minus the riffs. Phenomenally executed thanks to Shane Perlowin's virtuosic guitar work, it's the sort of stylistic shift that typically merits a name change.—Corbie Hill
