African Folktales | Sertoma Amphitheatre | Stage | Indy Week

African Folktales

When: Sat., June 4, 3 p.m. 2011

Storytelling is such an intense craft. Some may think that spinning a yarn or telling an all-out "porky pie" is easy because it's all made up, but it isn't. All stories—grand whoppers or simple tales—are grounded in some sort of truth, and the masters of the craft have sprung from the oldest cultures on earth, learning to take a heroic event or boring moral caution and weave a colorful, lyrical tapestry that entrances audiences of all ages. That's why Bright Star Children's Theatre's African Folktales is such a treat. Not only do you get a chance to expose your little ones to the musical quality of African storytelling, they can see how another culture shares similar histories and moralities. The 3 p.m. show is free. —Christina Cass
