ADF: Monica Bill Barnes & Company, Kate Weare Company

When: Tue., June 15, 2 & 8 p.m. and Wed., June 16, 8 p.m. 2010

American Dance Festival gets things off the ground by bringing in two critically acclaimed troupes for their ADF debuts. Both groups come highly recommended. Monica Bill Barnes & Company's overall approach is to explore the inherent humor and theatricality of daily life. The company will perform an excerpt from 2009's Another Parade, which features popular tunes from artists such as James Brown and Burt Bacharach and centers around the exhilarating emotion of performing onstage for an audience. The Kate Weare Company, based in Oakland, Calif., and New York, packs a substantial punch with its five-member band (counting the choreographer). They'll perform 2008's Bridge of Sighs, featuring a coed quartet that explores the range of desires and emotions that drive a person to love. The two companies will get in some good face time with each other, which can only be beneficial since both company namesakes will go on to teach at Peridance later this month. Performances are 2 and 8 today and 8 p.m. tomorrow night. —Sarah Ewald
