ADF: Eiko & Koma

When: June 28-30, 8 p.m. 2010

This year, American Dance Festival asks its visiting companies, "What is dance theater?" Eiko & Koma might well reply that dance theater melds the dance and theater worlds together for an unforgettable experience. Their performances involve a lot of balance and tightly controlled movements requiring much concentration. Much attention is also paid to production values in order to give the audience a full theatrical experience. The pair, which debuted in 1972, has performed at ADF before, first in 1983 and later premiering a work called Quartet in 2007. The majority of the dance world regards them as geniuses, and the MacArthur Foundation agrees: The duo received a coveted "genius grant" in 1996. This time around, three works are on the docket: 2009's Raven, 1984's Night Tide and 1976's White Dance, the piece that served as America's introduction to the two performers for their first show stateside. —Sarah Ewald
