Active Child, Balam Acab, Superhumanoids

When: Tue., May 8, 8:30 p.m. 2012

The double bill of California's Active Child and Pennsylvania's Balam Acab is, if nothing else, a brief encapsulation of the post-everything hybridization racing through the world formerly known as indie rock. For its part, Active Child pairs harp, falsetto vocals and backseat-sex beats in songs that slip constantly between gauzy psychedelics and radio-ready directness. Meanwhile, Balam Acab drowns sounds learned from Houston rap in a sea of 4AD principles—that is, the heaviest hip-hop cycles through the prettiest atmospherics to emerge both bold and beautiful. As you're watching Balam Acab, close your eyes and try to picture slow-motion footage of car speakers rattled apart by bass. That synesthesia isn't much of a stretch. Superhumanoids open the 8:30 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin
