"Across the Threshold" Creativity, Being & Healing Conference

When: Feb. 28-March 3 2013

Chris Jordan and Lily Yeh wouldn't be the first names you'd think of to keynote a conference hosted by a university dance program. Jordan is a photographer and filmmaker whose shocking footage of birds on a Pacific island besieged by water-borne garbage (bit.ly/MidWay) has made the rounds on Facebook in recent months. Since the 1980s, Yeh has helped devastated communities make public art that empowers and transforms their neighborhoods; in the Rwanda Healing Project, her most famous work, survivors of the 1994 genocide have constructed a memorial park and a village to address its aftermath.

But Across the Threshold is a conference devoted to exploring interdisciplinary methods by which dance and other artists may pursue social, environmental and personal activism in their ongoing work. Thursday through Sunday, a variety of workshops and panels from more than 50 presenters will deal with techniques and findings from creative research and indigenous folkways from around the world. Registration required; begins 7:30 a.m., keynote 8 p.m. —Byron Woods

Price: $100-$270
