Ackland Film Forum

When: Tue., Sept. 16, 7 p.m. 2014

In 1966, Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni dropped his first English-language film on American moviegoers, freaking them directly out and erecting a 1960s counter-culture touchstone. Based on a story by Argentine master Julio Cortázar, Blow-Up tells the story of a fashion photographer who accidentally captures an image of a murder on film—maybe. A case can be made that Blow-Up was the birth of modern cool in cinema, with its psychedelic vibe, Swinging London milieu and general air of hip decadence. The Ackland Film Forum hosts a free screening as part of its fall series themed around photography in cinema, with an introduction by professor Hassan Melehy. —Glenn McDonald
