Honor Veterans Day with a WWII theme

Halloween is over, but the town of Hillsborough is pulling out costumes again. Instead of witch or goblin garb, reenactors will dress in World War II era clothing and you're invited to don 1940's attire to help celebrate Veterans Day with a WWII theme on Saturday, Nov. 15. RAF pilots, including some from England who specialize in reenactment, and American Army and Navy and civilians will set up camp and homefront life behind Brick Alley Books. A small commissary will contain items that were available to soldiers, volunteers will "sell" war bonds, and you can take a peek at living quarters, equipment and drills. The Orange County Historical Museum will feature local residents who served during the war, hold a presentation about the role of dogs in the war effort, and play newsreels from the 1940s. Vintage cars will appear throughout downtown, students will have the chance to connect with WWII veterans to gather precious oral history, and all will be serended by big band music.

The event begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 5 p.m., with activities on Churton Street, at the Orange County Historical Museum and in the municipal parking lot off West King Street. For information, call 245-0062.
