Treat yourself to an evening of women playing jazz in the Bull City. The Spelman College Jazz Ensemble is performing a program titled Messages From the Heart, which features traditional jazz by Duke Ellington, Abby Lincoln, Horace Silver, Nina Simone and others. The ensemble has been a tradition for over 20 years at the historically African-American women's college in Atlanta, and performed all over the country, from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans to the Tri Cities Festival in Cleveland to the Kennedy Center in D.C. Led by veteran director Joe Jennings, the 14-member female ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists has been proving to audiences for years that jazz isn't just a man's world after all. All proceeds from the concert go to toward the Josephine Dobbs Clement scholarship, created to help young women attend Spelman College and to fund other events on campus. 7:30 p.m., Hayti Heritage Center, Durham. 680-8080. $20, $15 students.
