From being a prep cook to attending culinary school to working as a professional chef, 23-year-old Stephanie Szwagiel has turned her passion for cooking into a full-time career. The Chapel Hill native got her start at 411 West when she was in high school, and it was here that her fascination for cooking sparked. On Sunday, Jan. 19, anyone with an interest in the culinary arts is invited to Szwagiel's open house event at 411 West, where she is currently the executive sous chef. A graduate of the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont with a two-year degree in the culinary arts as well as a BA in Food and Beverage Management, Szwagiel will be sharing her experiences with NECI and discussing trends in the culinary industry. NECI founder and chef instructor, Chef Michel LeBorgne will also be on hand to answer questions. This event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. and is open to the public, free of charge. 411 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill. Call 967-2782 for more information. –Melissa McEvoy
