Representing the Mambo

Best way to prevent the early-winter blues: Shake the snow off your caboose to traditional salsa, son, guaracha, bolero, merengue, cumbia and more on Friday at the Montas' Annual Christmas Party. Just don't come expecting Gloria Estefan or Ricky Martin: Winston-Salem's West End Mambo specializes in old-style Latin music, rooted in the Cuban tradition. Cesar Oviedo, the septet's leader, was born in Nicaragua but earned his stripes in 12 years in the Miami salsa band scene. He calls their music "making love in dance." Warm-up dancing with Roberto Montas begins at 9:30 p.m.; the first set starts at 10:30.

Friday, Dec. 13, from 9:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. at the Montas International Lounge, 2223 East Highway 54, Durham. $15, $12 members, $10 students/military with ID. Reservations are recommended for preferred seating. For more information, call 361-2390 or visit www.westendmambo.com or www.montaslounge.com.
