Gwendoline Y. Fortune

In Growing Up Nigger Rich, Durham author Gwendoline Y. Fortune tells the tale of black professor Gayla Turner, who returns during a sabbatical to the small Southern town where she grew up. Her friend Louise's involvement with a white man echoes a doomed interracial love affair in the town decades ago, which haunts the town still. Meanwhile, Gayla worries over her own relationship with her father, and remains oblivious to her husband's philandering. There aren't many books that tell rich, detailed stories about the lives of second- or third-generation professional African Americans, but this one qualifies. Hear Fortune reading from the book at McIntyre's Fine Books on Saturday, July 6, at 11 a.m. Call 542-3030 for details.
