Celebrating Billy Strayhorn

Now in its seventh year, the Hillsborough Arts Center presents Celebrating Billy Strayhorn, a two-day event celebrating the music of the renowned jazz composer and Duke Ellington collaborator. Seems Strayhorn's father and grandparents were Hillsborough natives, and he spent time there as a child. This year, the festival has expanded to a two-day event at the Orange High School. The tribute kicks off with a free all-day jazz fest, including performances and music clinics. David Hadju, who wrote the Strayhorn biography Lush Life, will be on hand. Hadju's wife, award-winning jazz vocalist Karen Oberlin, will perform at the Strayhorn concert Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The featured artist is jazz pianist, noted speaker and teacher Harry Pickens, who'll also present a seminar exploring the Ellington-Strayhorn musical legacy on Sunday, April 21, 2:30 p.m., at the Orange High School Band Room. Call 732-7741 for details. --Angie Carlson
