Lewis Black at Charlie Goodnight's
"If H.L. Mencken were alive, Lewis Black would be his favorite comic," says screenwriter Norman Steinberg. Although Black has appeared as an actor in movies like Hannah and Her Sisters and on episodes of TV shows like Law & Order, the Yale Drama School graduate is perhaps best known for his screaming, itchy, pissed-off persona on Comedy Central's The Daily Show. In his segment on The Daily Show, called "Back in Black," the comedian takes on all authority figures, from politicians to policemen, and sends up all forms of stupidity with his trademark snarling delivery. "I told my friends that I was going to make a CD," he says, "and to give you an idea of how smart my friends are, they said, 'What kind of CD?' I said, 'Nothing but love songs.'" (Black does indeed have a CD out, called The White Album.) See Black at Charlie Goodnight's in Raleigh on New Year's Eve at 7:30 p.m., 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. Call 828-5233 for details.
