para: flight, space

Jane D. Marsching, who has taught at UNC-Chapel Hill and is currently the assistant professor of photography at Syracuse University, is a photographer, sculptor and media artist working with issues of belief, science, the paranormal and perception. Her current exhibition, para: flight, space, includes 35-foot long panoramic digital photographs that could represent alien spacescapes seen from the bunker-like windows of a space ship: The photos include, among other things, layered images of winged creatures, limbs, deep space and meteorites. The show also includes an interactive computer, which allows visitors to explore cyberspace in terms of Marsching's idea of it as a Wünderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities. Her show opens Thursday, Nov. 15, from 6-8 p.m. at the John & June Allcott Gallery in the Hanes Art Center at UNC-Chapel Hill, and runs through Dec. 7. Marsching will also be giving an artist's lecture and panel discussion on Monday, Nov. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Hanes Center auditorium. You can also see her images at her Web site, thesweepers.com/jane/para. Call 962-0216 for details about the exhibition and lecture.
