A Million Ways to Die in the West

Rated R 116 min. 2014

Seth MacFarlane returns to the big screen for the first time since the critical and commercial surprise hit Ted, and to say that he suffers a sophomore slump is being too kind. MacFarlane stars as Albert, a sheep rancher recently dumped by girlfriend Amanda Seyfried, and who spends every waking moment despising life in the 1880s. His mood brightens a bit when a mysterious woman (Charlize Theron) enters town, posing as a potential homebuyer, but in truth merely waiting for her outlaw husband (Liam Neeson, in his latest attempt to cross into comedy) to return from his latest heist. MacFarlane has always had the aura of a creator in need of someone to tell him no occasionally. Clearly that person has not been found, as every ill conceived penis and scatological joke that could have possibly entered his mind is found in this movie. That's not to say that viewers won't find anything to laugh at, but the comedy bits land with a thud nearly half of the time.
