Whether you're from the South or a transplant to the area, you know this region takes biscuits seriously. Really seriously. So the BISCUIT BAKING CHALLENGE at Ninth Street Bakery on Saturday, Aug. 23, should produce some delectable bites.
It's $8 to get in but the audience will serve as the jury, sampling and selecting its favorite biscuit among the competitors. There's a cash prize for the winner, but in this part of world the bragging rights are worth even more. Registration is free but you must email firstname.lastname@example.org to get on the list. The event starts at 6 p.m.
Talk of biscuits may bring bacon to mind as they often go together. BACON AND WINE? That's a less common pairing but you can find out how to do it right at Seaboard Wine & Tasting Bar on Friday, Aug. 22 at 7:15 p.m. The shop is hosting a structured tasting of eight wines of assorted types that pair well with bacon. It's $29 and reservations are required. Call 919-831-0850.
It's not too late to enjoy DOWNTOWN RALEIGH RESTAURANT WEEK. The event, which features restaurants offering three-course prix fixe dinners for either $20 or $30 (depending on the venue), began on Monday but continues through Sunday, Aug. 24.
Some places are also offering three-course pairings of beer, wine or cocktails for an extra $10 per person. A few of the restaurants are this year offering a new "elite experience" for $65 which will get you from four to seven courses plus beverage pairings highlighting what the chefs feel are their best menu offerings.
More than three dozen restaurants are participating with cuisines including Indian, Mexican, Korean and classic American. Visit www.DineDowntownRaleigh.com for a complete list and to discover what your favorite spots are offering. —Curt Fields
