(500) Days of Summer

When: Fri., June 11, 9 p.m. 2010

Last summer, the sleeper hit (500) Days of Summer charmed audiences with its unconventional and quirky narrative. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a hopeless romantic, falls for Summer (Zooey Deschanel), a girl who's jaded by love and isn't really looking for a boyfriend. It may sound like every other romantic comedy out there, from the beginning the narrator tells us, "This is a story of boy meets girl, but this is not a love story." Using a hot indie rock soundtrack, clever editing and witty dialogue, director Marc Webb's feature-length debut is a refreshing change of pace from the barrage of formulaic rom-coms. If you missed it the first time, catch it at the NCMA as part of its Outdoor Film series. —Belem Destefani
