12 Years a Slave

When: Fri., Aug. 1, 9 p.m. 2014

Summer movie series don't tend to get too heavy with their selections—who wants to enjoy a pleasant evening outdoors bawling their eyes out? Apparently, the film bookers at NCMA do. The lauded 2013 film 12 Years a Slave (which garnered the first ever Best Picture Oscar for an African-American director) is hard to watch with its up-close view of the horrifying violence and heart-wrenching brutality inflicted on slaves in the United States. If you have any shred of a conscience, the true tale of Solomon Northup's journey through hell and back will leave you feeling hollowed out inside for days. Still, this is a movie everyone should see and learn from, no matter how intense the experience may be. —Allison Hussey
