Women Beware Women

When: Nov. 8-18 2012

It's hard to reconcile the two images that are out in advance from this production. Nick Karner's ludicrous/ luscious video (at vimeo.com/50874663) features contemporary young women dressing to kill and then pairing up for snogging after a dance (under the disapproving gazes of older adults). Then there's Alex Maness' still photography, which transforms Alyssa Wong into a gore-streaked wraith from the realm of Butoh. Jay O'Berski has long been a director unafraid to find new truths in old texts. Here, he's unleashed on a Jacobean tragicomedy recently rediscovered by modern companies. In Thomas Middleton's 17th-century drama, unchecked desire and power destabilize one relationship and then several others, as a series of increasingly dangerous liaisons draw a webwork of friends into a game without frontiers and a world, in O'Berski's words, "where love eats itself and tastes delicious." An all-female cast enacts a sensuous tale of intrigue and murder. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays–Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 18. —Byron Woods
