BACKWOODS GOLDEN GIGANTIC
WOOTINI—Chatham County artist Beth Tacular says of Backwoods Golden Gigantic that it "has to do with retreating back to the gigantic expansive wildness of yore and yesteryear." The exhibit features three artists: Raleigh's Eric Amling, Brooklyn's Matt Lafleur and Tacular herself. All of the artists have a connection to simplicity: Lafleur is a chimney sweep by profession, for example, and Tacular, a member of The Bowerbirds, often lives out of her band's travel van. According to Tacular, the exhibit aims to transport its audience to a similarly simpler place: "This place is silken and gilded and floats mist-haloed in my mind ... a half-memory of better times, when a squirrel could still hop from tree to tree ... all the way from the Atlantic to the Mississippi, without ever touching the ground." The show opened Friday, May 11, and it will continue through June 5 during Wootini's store hours: Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday from noon-5 p.m. For more info, visit www.wootini.com or call 933-6061. —Megan Stein
